Hurricane Season is Here – Plan Ahead and Be Prepared

Hurricane season is here! The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office wants the community to know that we are fully prepared and coordinated to respond. With our dedicated team, strong partnerships and emergency plans in place, we stand ready to serve and protect you before, during, and after.

Now is the time for residents and our businesses to take proactive steps to prepare. Being ready ahead of time is key to staying safe.

Every household should start with a solid plan. A family communication plan ensures that everyone knows how to get in touch and where to meet after a hurricane. Knowing your evacuation zone and having multiple routes mapped out can save precious time in an emergency. For those with medical or mobility challenges, registering with the Osceola County Special Needs Shelter Registry is a vital step towards safety.

A well-stocked disaster kit is essential. Experts recommend at least a three-day water supply – one gallon per person per day and enough nonperishable foods to last the same amount of time. Other items you must have include flashlights, extra batteries, portable cell phone chargers, a can opener, a battery or hand-cranked radio, your necessary medications, a tool kit, and a first aid kit. Keep important documents like your ID’s, insurance papers, and medical records in a waterproof container or bag.

During hurricane season, staying informed is crucial. Follow trusted sources such as the National Weather Service, Osceola County Emergency Management, local news outlets, and the official social media accounts of the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office. Residents can also sign up for real-time emergency alerts at AlertOsceola.org.

Once a storm has passed, remain indoors until authorities declare it safe to go outside. Avoid flooded roads and never touch downed power lines. If using a generator, operate it outdoors in a well-ventilated area away from windows. Cheak on your family and your neighbors, especially those who are elderly or live alone and report any non-emergency concerns to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office at 407-348-2222.

Your safety is our top priority. Let’s stay prepared and stand strong!
