Osceola County Sheriff’s Office Hurricane Preparedness Guide

Hurricane Season: June 1 – November 30

As hurricane season begins, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office urges all residents and businesses to be prepared. The time to plan is now—before a storm is on the radar.

1. Make a Plan

  • Family Communication Plan: Ensure every family member knows how to get in touch and where to meet after a storm.

  • Evacuation Routes: Know your evacuation zone and have multiple routes planned.

  • Special Needs: Register with the Osceola County Special Needs Shelter Registry if someone in your home has medical or mobility issues.

2. Build a Disaster Supply Kit

Your kit should include:

  • At least 3 days of water (1 gallon per person, per day)

  • Non-perishable food

  • Flashlights and extra batteries

  • Manual can opener

  • Battery-powered or hand-cranked radio

  • Medications and first-aid supplies

  • Essential documents (IDs, insurance papers, medical records)

  • Cash

  • Pet supplies

  • Face masks, hand sanitizer, and hygiene items

3. Stay Informed

  • Follow trusted sources for weather updates:

    • National Weather Service (NWS)

4. Secure Your Home

  • Trim trees and secure loose outdoor items.

  • Install storm shutters or board up windows.

  • Check your roof and seal any leaks.

  • Bring pets indoors early and prepare a safe space for them.

5. After the Storm

  • Stay indoors until officials say it’s safe.

  • Avoid flooded roads and downed power lines.

  • Use generators outdoors only and away from windows.

  • Check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those living alone.

  • Report non-emergency concerns to the Sheriff’s Office at 407-348-2222.
