Hurricane Season Preparedness: Be Ready Before the Storm
As hurricane season begins, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office urges all residents and businesses to prepare now, before a storm is on the radar. Planning ahead can make all the difference in protecting you, your family, your pets, and your property.
Sheriff Christopher A. Blackmon and the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office want the community to know that we are here for you. With dedicated personnel, strong partnerships, and emergency plans in place, we stand ready to serve and protect our residents before, during, and after a storm.
Make a Plan
Every household should have a family emergency plan. Ensure every family member knows how to communicate and where to meet if you become separated during or after a hurricane.
Residents should also know their evacuation zone and identify multiple evacuation routes in advance. Waiting until the last minute can lead to unnecessary delays and increased risk.
For individuals with medical or mobility challenges, registering with the Osceola County Special Needs Shelter Registry is an important step toward ensuring their safety during an emergency.
Build a Disaster Supply Kit
A well-stocked disaster kit is essential. Experts recommend having at least a three-day supply of water—one gallon per person, per day—and enough nonperishable food for everyone in your household.
Your emergency kit should also include:
* Flashlights and extra batteries
* Portable cell phone chargers
* A manual can opener
* A battery-powered or hand-cranked radio
* Necessary medications
* First-aid supplies
* A basic tool kit
* Cash
* Pet food and pet supplies
* Face masks, hand sanitizer, and hygiene items
Keep important documents such as IDs, insurance policies, medical records, and other critical paperwork in a waterproof container or bag.
Stay Informed
Reliable information is critical during hurricane season. Follow trusted sources such as:
* National Weather Service
* Osceola County Emergency Management
* Local news outlets
* Official Osceola County Sheriff’s Office social media accounts
Residents are also encouraged to sign up for real-time emergency notifications through AlertOsceola.org.
Secure Your Home
Taking steps to protect your property before a storm arrives can help reduce damage and improve safety.
* Trim trees and remove dead branches.
* Secure or bring any loose outdoor furniture, decorations, or equipment.
* Install storm shutters or board up windows when necessary.
* Inspect your roof and repair any leaks or vulnerable areas.
* Bring pets indoors early and prepare a safe, comfortable space for them.
After the Storm
Once a storm has passed, remain indoors until local officials announce that it is safe to go outside.
Avoid flooded roadways and never approach downed power lines. If using a generator, operate it outdoors in a well-ventilated area, away from windows and doors, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
Check on family members and neighbors, especially elderly residents and those who live alone. Report any non-emergency concerns to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office at 407-348-2222.
We’re Here for You
