Background Investigator
Job Description
The Background Investigator is responsible for providing administrative assistance to the Recruiting Department. The employee will utilize investigative techniques to conduct complete background investigations on applicants for various positions within the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office. The employee will perform all duties listed below and any other duties assigned by the supervisor or designee.
Requirements:
- Must have a minimum of five (5) years of full-time certified law enforcement experience.
- Must be able to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must have completed a 40-hour approved Background Investigations School or be able to complete the course upon placement into the position.
- Must be CVSA certified or able to complete the certification course upon placement into the position.
- Must be willing to commit to a two-year assignment, in accordance with Policy 326 (D)(5).
- Must have no disciplinary actions resulting in suspension or loss of pay within the past year.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Must have strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Must possess investigative and interviewing skills.
- Must have effective time management skills.
- Must demonstrate strong public speaking abilities.
- Must be able to work with limited supervision.
- Must be organized, detail-oriented, and capable of multitasking.
- Must be proficient in using computers and job-related software/programs, including Spillman, Microsoft Office, FINDER, DAVID, Laserfiche, etc.
- Must be NCIC/FCIC certified or be able to complete the training upon placement into the position.
- Must maintain accurate records through computer entries, written reports, and notes.
- Must be able to work independently and prioritize assignments to meet deadlines.

Paid Time Off (PTO)
Members gain 16 hours of PTO each month.
Longevity Benefit
The Longevity Benefit awarded to members who have completed five (5) or more years of continuous service with the agency. Beginning with the 5th completed year of service, eight (8) additional hours are added to the member’s PTO balance for each year of service.
Example: A ten-year member receives 96 hours of PTO each year. An additional 48 hours of longevity pay is awarded and deposited into his/her PTO on the merit date.
Education Reimbursement
Members who attend an accredited college or university can receive compensation for completed classes. Members pursuing an undergraduate degree can receive $2,000 per fiscal year; the graduate degree can receive $3,000 per fiscal year.
