On February 27, 2022, Deputies responded to a call of an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Citizens complained there were individuals on motorcycles who were pointing guns at people. When Deputies arrived on the scene, several people fled on their motorcycles. A traffic stop was attempted on the suspect; however, the suspect ignored the marked patrol car with lights and sirens activated and continued to flee. The deputy did not pursue the suspect.
Information was later obtained by law enforcement that the suspect was refueling his motorcycle at a gas station. Deputies responded to the location of the suspect and attempted to apprehend him. During the apprehension, a fire ignited causing three deputies and the suspect to be burned.
The Fire Marshall is working with the Sheriff’s Office to fully investigate the events that took place at the gas station. Witness statements are being collected and physical evidence is being gathered.
According to the Fire Marshall, their investigation includes tests that we will likely not have results for a couple of weeks. The suspect and one deputy remain at the hospital and are undergoing treatment. The other two deputies were medically released.
This is an ongoing and active investigation. We are focused on determining the facts of what took place and on the well-being of the deputies and the suspect. We hope for a speedy recovery for all involved.
