When Rivera saw deputies, he discarded drug paraphernalia in nearby bushes. Rivera was taken into custody and questioned by investigators.

Rivera initially did not cooperate with the investigation, but later admitted to detectives he was with the victim at the time of the incident. Based on the information, detectives obtained a felony warrant for First Degree Murder. Rivera was arrested and booked into the Osceola County Jail.
