Appointed general counsel by Sheriff Hansell, Linda D. Penny is well-known to members of the Sheriff’s Office. For many years, she has provided legal training to both our sworn and civilian employees. Linda earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice at the University of Florida, and her Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law. For the last 23 years, she has been training criminal justice personnel, both pre-service and in-service. She was previously employed full time by both the Southeast Florida Institute of Criminal Justice and the Central Florida Criminal Justice Institute as an attorney-instructor. She is a member of the Florida Bar and the Florida Association of Police Attorneys.
One of Linda’s strengths is the ability to communicate complex legal issues in a manner that is easy to understand for those who work with the law on a day-to-day basis. Linda has done legal training for criminal justice agencies around the country. As a legal issues trainer, she presents instruction which enables class participants to better understand the law as it relates to their work. She understands the officers’ need for making quick decisions which may be reviewed and criticized later, and teaches a realistic perspective of their potential liabilities. Linda keeps officers informed of changes in the law and court decisions that impact their positions.
